yoga class descriptions

All “styles” of yoga evolve from the traditional Hatha (Sun/Moon) yoga of breath integration and movement, drawing awareness inwardly and allowing the breath to align the body in asana (posture).  Tantra (To stretch beyond limits/boundaries) is the source of Hatha yoga, that binds all techniques and disciplines of yoga addressing the philosophical (world view) system and the scientific (body of knowledge; embodying philosophy) system.  Vinyasa means to place “nyasa’ in a special way “vi”.   Vinyasa is the linking of breath to movement.  Book 2, verse 46 in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras  explains how asanas (postures), should contain the qualities of sthira (steadiness, ease) and sukha (joy, happiness).  By embodying this state of being on the yoga mat, we begin to cultivate an awareness of these qualities outside of the yoga asana practice. Once we become more available to the present moment, life becomes so rich and full and such a blessing, a celebration of all you have been given.

Intro to Yoga

This 4-week progressive course is designed for those new to yoga to explore the basics and develop strength, balance, flexibility and experience the peace of mind that yoga promises to deliver.  Ask questions, experiment with yoga and discover increased health, joy and contentment.  Upon completion of this course you will be ready to take any yoga class and develop a safe personal practice tailored to you.  People of any age and any lifestyle are welcome to participate in this course in a safe, supportive, caring and non-competitive environment.  No prior yoga experience necessary.

Guided Ashtanga

Based on the the traditional Ashtanga Yoga, this class emphasizes technique, tradition, alignment, and inspiration.  You will learn yoga postures in a flowing sequence of movement and experience new potentials in strength and flexibilty.  Appropriate for mixed levels.

Full Primary Series Ashtanga

When you’re ready for the full Ashtanga experience, this is the class for you. In a fast-paced, dynamic sequence that opens new dimensions of the mind-body-breath connection, you will begin to move into a direct experience of the flow of the practice. With careful emphasis on the traditional vinyasa method, this class presents the full Ashtanga Yoga Primary series. It is taught only by people who are qualified, and will keep the integrity and purity of the practice. Prior yoga experience and proficiency of a high level of athletic conditioning recommended. Be prepared to sweat.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a practice where we learn to flow in an intelligent sequence of postures, allowing our breath to lead the way, bringing awareness to the bandhas & drishti to invite a moving meditation on the mat, listening and being receptive to our inner communication, energy and developing renewal, encompassing grace, ease, spontaneity of right action and attunement with spirit.  We will practice Sun Salutations, holding postures, reconnecting to the breath and energy locks, and bringing awareness to the principles of alignment.  Classes will include standing postures, forward folds, backbends, laterals, extensions, twists, and inversions.   Vinyasa Flow Yoga helps us to remember to stay in the flow of life, embracing the 'now' as it is constantly changing. All levels welcome.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is a practice for everyone, young and old, active and inactive, stressed or depressed, over-tired or over-stimulated. This therapeutic and gentle practice focuses on the restorative and renewing nature of yoga in a supportive nurturing environment. By turning your attention inward, you release deep tension, relax completely, release tension and restore energy. Restorative yoga is a passive yoga practice with long holds and little movement that allows your muscles to relax deep into the core of your being, mentally, physically and emotionally. The practice is done on the floor or chair seated or lying while supported with props and each posture is held 3-5 minutes allowing for an internal shift of letting go and surrender. Restorative Yoga has been shown to reduce the effects of stress-related disease and beneficial for hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression, immune and digestive dysfunction and much more. It is for those times when you feel weak, fatigued or stressed from your daily activities.
